The word "Wip" is mired in arcane lore. Most historians agree, however, that it is derived from the word used by leathersmiths in ancient York to describe a whip that was still under construction - the absent 'h' being symbolic for the work that was yet to be done on the item. However, many reasonable people suspect that this explanation is utter tripe, and that 'wip' is really an acronym, standing for Work In Progress.
