Conformatron

The smallest unit of conformity.
Picture an enormous flock of sheep all moving in the same direction. The conformatron in this case would be a single sheep.
Now imagine the sheep are actually humans, and the direction they are travelling in is determined by the whims of Earth Government and its advertising department.
This is the more common variety of conformatron - the basis behind the popularity of reality TV.
