Open radio
You could make an internet radio station which anyone can add tracks to. You have a server playing tracks randomly from a public directory.
You could make it so when a track is deleted it can be reverted for a while, so that things don't have to be uploaded again in the case of annoyances.
When a track is uploaded it could be set to play only a certain number of times and then delete, for weird interlude messages. Also you could have a message box - type into and a speech synthesiser reads it out a certain number of times, as 'public service announcements'.
There might be problems with copyright.
If costs were to arise, it might be possible to run a kind of fundraising thing amongst people who listen. You could show upcoming and 'happened' costs and a balance.
You could allow the listeners to rate tracks, thus affecting their play regularity.
Does anything like this exist?
There appears to be some form of mind-reading gong on. I was just thinking about starting some form of internets radio station(s).
- A couple of repeaters that play weird ambient noise.
- Various mindcloud tracks on repeat/shuffle, interspersed with some other crud.
but then an open station would be pretty wikked as well. It is worth doing as an experiment in absolute terror.
Do you have a technical knowledge of how this could be pulled off?
- Very NO! I've been trying to get QUICKTIME streaming working but to no avail. I will keep trying.................
This looks interesting. I don't have time to check it out completely right now...
- this is the vein I'm looking into. I just have to work out if I can run a shoutcast server on DH.

MORE INFORMATION.
While it will be impossible to run an internet radio server on Dreamhost, there are various services that will serve up a station for a monthly fee - depending on the number of simultaneous listeners, the bit rate and so on. I realised that a more modest station would be within even my financial means to fund...something I think is worthwhile as a beginning experiment. If it works well then the operation can be upscaled. Stay tuned...and start thinking about CONTENT for the streaming win... Tristan Miller 14:11, 21 September 2007 (GMT)
