Selfishness
We live in a society that promotes terrible behaviour - both of individuals and groups. To a large extent, this is a means by which this economic system supports itself. "The media" is used to influence individual thoughts and behaviours towards those that are most economically useful: selfishness, self-consciousness, paranoia, fear of others, waste, over-consumption, short-sightedness etc. etc. etc...
All of these attributes already exist in each of us - instincts, evolutionary throwbacks which occasionally have their uses. They are the worst aspects of our humanity - facets of our being we can easily rise above by virtue of our amazing brains. We have the ability to moderate our animalistic tendencies - the capacity for abstract thought gives us reason, language, foresight and the appreciation of beauty, just to name a few of the things that separate us from the standard creatures of this planet.
Unfortunately, our current society brings out the worst in humanity - it arose from and is maintained by what comes out when we don't or can't THINK. The result is a disaster machine that carries with it towards destruction - willing itself back on course every time something turns it around.
How do we break out of this headlong race to obliteration? There may be a simple answer, though there are forces at work that will ruin anybody who possesses it, through ridicule, the boot and the gun. All we can hope to do is to dissolve away the self-correcting mechanisms of the machine - break the thoughtless thought patterns that keep it rolling.
Individually, we need to put aside our own bullshit and work on bringing out the best in ourselves and others. Detach identities and self-esteem from the cheap and false expectations of those who seek to psycho-lobotomise and control humans. The shabby trickery is easy to expose, and we must expose it before it ruins us all. Using our brains to overcome our selfish instincts, we can immediately begin to evolve society in ways that defy disaster.
USE THAT BRAIN! BE REASONABLE!
