How to best organise the content?

I was thinking the traditional Underversean way, with some modifications. This is to have pages that group genres, media, artists and the user can navigate this structure to find what they want. Unfortunately, this lends itself to adding 1000's of 'navigation' pages to the wiki, covering all permutations of the terms of interest.

So I've been experimenting with categories. To place a page in a category, all you need to do is add the category tag to the top of the page when editing, ie [[Category:Monkeys]]. If the category does not yet exist, it will be created by this process. It is possible to place a page in any number of categories. The user can then browse the categories, which appear as sorted directories of things under the category heading.

Again, there's a problem with this: you can't sort of 'search by category' in MediaWiki. For example, a user searching for comedy films can't search applying the filters 'must be in both Film and Comedy categories'. There are some MediaWiki extensions that make this possible, but I'm struggling to get them working. This would obviously be a great way to organise the content, as it would simply require the creation of one-word categories rather than thousands of permutations of categories...
