The game of Chinese Whispers

(Extracted from http://wiki.mindcloud.org/wiki/The_game_of_Chinese_Whispers ;-D)

This game shares the information degrading properties of its namesake, but does not involve deception or racial stereotyping.

The game is played by feeding the output of Google Translate back into the input several times, to see how badly mangled the back-translated text becomes. Here is the general procedure:

  1. Select a block of text in your native language
  2. Copy and paste the text into the input of the translator
  3. Translate into as foreign a language as you can imagine
  4. Copy the translated text, and paste it into the input of the translator
  5. Translate this back into your native language
  6. Read the mangled prose and laugh (or cry!)
  7. Repeat the process, using the mangled text as the new input

Sometimes the text will degrade quickly, sometimes subtle changes will gradually accumulate before a sudden drop in coherence, other times it will disappoint by converging to something only moderately amusing and not changing at all on successive translations. Give it a try! Song lyrics work quite well.

Note: the whispers here are "Chinese" because this happened to be the language of choice the first time around, with hilarious results.

Example

Below is most of the content of this page, mangled through two repeated translations into Arabic!

Art

Actually the result can be found quite artistic. Almost like a William Burroughs cut-up technique. How good is finding creative hacks of technology?
